Why do we see so few women in careers like finance and tech, and so many in careers like HR and K-12 Teaching? What are the challenges, and what needs to happen to overcome them? What are industry leaders doing to reverse the trend, and what can we as individuals do to bridge the gap? Senior executives from a range of industries will share their experiences forging new career paths and reflections on what works in bridging the gender gap.

Clara Brenner | Co-founder and CEO | Tumml | Sloan alumna

Clara is the co-founder and CEO of Tumml, an urban ventures accelerator.  A nonprofit, Tumml’s mission is to empower entrepreneurs to solve urban problems.  Clara is responsible for Tumml’s partnership development, marketing, and fundraising.  

In 2014, Forbes listed her as one of its “30 Under 30” for Social Entrepreneurship and The San Francisco Business Times named Tumml “Best Startup” at its Tech & Innovation Awards. Clara has also been named a “Female Founder to Watch” by Women 2.0. Clara’s work energizing urban impact entrepreneurship has been featured in several publications, including Forbes, VentureBeat, Entrepreneur Magazine, and Silicon Valley Business Journal, among others.  

Clara has a background in urban real estate and sustainability. She worked as an Associate with WestMill Capital, a real estate investment start-up focused on alternative financing and merchandising mixes authentic to the local area. Notably, she developed and edited content for two WestMill web platforms (Popularise.com and Fundrise.com) to interact with the community about local real estate projects. Prior to WestMill Capital, Clara worked at AECOM, GVA Advantis, and Monument Realty. Clara earned her MBA from MIT Sloan and her BA from NYU. She sits on the MIT Sloan Alumni Board.

Dr. Belen Carrillo-Rivas | Head of R&D Innovation Projects and Strategy, BioTherapeutics R&D | Pfizer

At Pfizer, lead the identification, creation and implementation and of key strategic and operational initiatives in direct support of research and clinical development activities.  During her time at Pfizer, have been instrumental on building Pfizer’s Biotherapeutics entrepreneurial R&D units leading a project centered valuation driven initiative that resulted in the consolidation of the current pipeline. Currently serve a crucial role in the realization of the innovative and meaningful approaches by which to integrate the R&D ecosystem bringing together key stakeholders in alignment to pursue the goal of delivering differentiated medicines of value. To this end, have identified and established partnerships and alliances with external entities to extend the scientific and development capabilities and innovation of Pfizer research teams across different therapeutic areas and Precision Medicine.  In realizing this effort, established the PFE 23andme Collaboration.  Instrumental in the realization of the Pfizer’s End-to-End Biologics initiative aimed transform Pfizer’s science and approach in the development of optimized biologics across all stages of the drug development process through to commercialization.  In realizing this effort led the identification and establishment of the Pfizer-MIT Synthetic Biology Alliance.  Served a cornerstone role in the formation and institution of the Pfizer Centers for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI)

Prior to joining Pfizer, led the respiratory diseases program at Resolvyx Pharmaceuticals where she led the design and implementation of pre-clinical and early clinical strategies resulting in $25M in series B financing.  Prior to Resolvyx, was at Peptimmune Inc. in Cambridge, MA where served as the head of the Multiple Sclerosis program and acted as a critical strategic resource for the board of director and scientific advisory board, including an instrumental role in the $500M partnership with Novartis.  Before the Peptimmune appointment, served as the lead of the cardiovascular program at Daiichi Sankyo Pharmaceuticals and was a scientific liaison with the Head of R&D at corporate headquarters in Japan. Prior to Daiichi Sankyo, worked at Enanta Pharmaceuticals where designed and developed inflammatory disease models for evaluation of clinical candidates and was a scientific leader of business development team, with key role in discussions with strategic partners.

Awarded with the most prestigious Spanish Government Overseas Postgraduate Studentship, received her Doctorate’s degree from Oxford University in Oxford, U.K.  Was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School in the Center for Blood Research Institute.

Sally Green | Former Chief Operating Officer | Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond | Sloan alumna

Sally Green was First Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. She had responsibility for the Bank's payments systems, outreach, financial management, information technology and corporate support services.

At the national level, Sally chaired the Federal Reserve System’s Conference of Chief Operating Officers. She was also a member of the Financial Services Policy Committee, which sets the strategic direction and oversees the System’s payments services.

Prior to joining the Richmond Fed, Sally held various positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in its payments systems, economic research and corporate support areas.

Sally currently serves as a Director on the Cambridge Trust Company and Cambridge Bancorp Boards of Directors. She has also recently joined the ChildFund International Board of Directors. While in Richmond, she was Chair of the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs, served on the Board of the United Way and chaired its Women's Leadership Initiative. An advocate for early childhood development, Sally was a member of the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation and the Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond Leadership Council. She received the 2012 YWCA Outstanding Woman in Business Award. Sally has recently joined the Board of Directors of ChildFund International, which helps children in 30 countries around the world. 

Sally received her bachelor’s degree in economics from Mount Holyoke College and earned a master of science in management from the Sloan School at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was a member of the Executive Advisory Council of the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond. Sally is married and has two daughters and one son-in-law. 

Vickie Mortimer | Operations Leader | Amazon

Vickie joined Amazon in 1998 when music was the breakthrough product line and there were only two Amazon fulfillment centers across the world.  Since then Vickie has led numerous fulfillment centers both in the United States and Germany while supporting the launch of a variety of new initiatives during the last 15 years ranging from new product lines and processes to new technology.  As the Director of North America Operations focused on new builds, Vickie supports the onboarding and ramp of each new center ensuring operations can successfully manage the steep ramp from green field to full capacity.  Aside from that, Vickie spends a good portion of her time mentoring MBA Pathways and other leaders as they learn to navigate their way towards more senior leadership positions within Amazon.

Vickie has earned her Bachelor Degree from Albertus Magnus College and her MBA from IAU. 

Vickie resides in New Castle, Delaware with her family. When not traveling, Vickie enjoys spending her time working around the house and in the yard enjoying the novelty of downtime with loved ones.

Debra Stabile | Managing Director and Chief Risk Officer | Citi Retail Services | Sloan alumna

Debra Stabile is Chief Risk Officer and a Managing Director for Citi Retail Services, the Citi business that provides consumer and commercial credit card products, services, and retail solutions to national and regional retailers across the U.S. 

Ms. Stabile joined Citi in 2005 after three years with D&B, the commercial information services company. There she established and led the Global Decisions Sciences group responsible for providing commercial analytic and modeling services to major companies globally.  Prior to joining D&B, Ms. Stabile spent 12 years at American Express.  During her tenure at American Express, Ms. Stabile held a number of Risk Management roles of increasing scope and responsibility, both for the consumer and commercial businesses. Her last role there was as Chief Credit Officer of their Consumer Charge Card business and head of the Underwriting Committee for North America Cards. Ms. Stabile also served as Assistant Commissioner for the City of New York’s Sanitation Department and the Director for the Fire Department’s Bureau of  Operations Research.  In addition, she was a management consultant with ICF Incorporated.   

Ms. Stabile has a graduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management.  She also possesses an undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics and Economics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  

Lisa M. Stapleton | Area Sales Director | Microsoft

Lisa M. Stapleton is an Area Sales Director in the Northeast District for Microsoft Corporation.  She is responsible for enabling the team of solutions sales professionals to translate our technologies into business value for our enterprise accounts. In this role, Lisa is focused on clearly understanding the business and technology priorities of our customers, and ensuring that our specialists effectively map our capabilities to customer priorities.  Lisa is a key member of the regional management team and a conduit to corporate and national programs and resources.  She carries specific responsibility for competitive strategies and pursuits in the East Region. 

Lisa brings to this assignment 20+ years of delivering results in sales and marketing management positions for such firms as Fidelity Investments, Hewlett-Packard and Cognizant Technology Solutions.  Lisa graduated from Boston College with a BA magna cum laude and from Yale University School of Management with an MBA .  She lives on the North Shore with her two boys, two dogs, two birds and too many bikes, balls and bats.
